I’ll be fairly blunt and quick with this point.
You send a lot of time on quotes, but not just the quote, how about the time you’ve spent on meeting the prospect, looking at the site and following them up with questions. Then comes the quote, grab the plans, log on to your quoting program, arrange your own quotes from material suppliers and your subbies. It’s a lot of time!

So you’ve gone out on your own. Hung your shingle out. Not growing your boss’s business any more. Well good for you, I mean that, He’ll get someone else. Time to grow a business for yourself and your family. If he can do it, I can to.

That’s how most business start. Rightly or wrongly doesn’t matter, that’s how most start.

The phone rings. It's a number you don't recognise. You answer politely and find out that it's a lead. It's someone who has seen some of your marketing and wants to talk to you about a project.

You get excited, this doesn't happen as often as it used to. Better go and have a look at this one so after a short conversation you agree a time to meet in the next day or so.

You’re in business and you’re good at what you do, so over time as your name gets around you start to get more and more word of mouth referrals. You get better at quoting. You win more work, more than you can handle yourself. So, you take on your first employee to get through everything. Now with someone on board to help you, things should be getting easier, but they’re not. Now on top of being on site all day, you have to answer their questions. Can’t they just get on with it and let you do your work? Productivity drops. But isn’t it supposed to go up?

I’ll get straight to the point. How many times have you started the year saying….

This year I’ll work less hours.

This year I’ll get off the tools.

This year we’ll take that holiday.

I just need more time!!

Ever found yourself saying that?

It’s a natural reaction as your business grows, there’s more to do, your To Do list is getting longer. And, as its your business, you’ve been in it from the start, you are the best person for the job.

One of the most effective things you can do to get more time is to STOP doing things. As your business grows YOU take on more and more…..and the result…..YOU work long hours, trying to get it all done….and a lot of the time, it DOESN’T get done, you get behind. Very frustrating all round, you, your family, your clients, your staff.

A lot of trades I talk to and work with tell me that they never have enough time, and when I dig a little deeper I find that one of the main reasons is that they spend a lot more time than they’d like on quoting. They win fewer quotes than they need to and that means they have to spend more time doing more quotes. And I know that quotes can take from a few minutes up to a few weeks.
